Enjoying Every Season of Life

I talked to a mother today whose children are 6 and 7. She would love to have more children at some point, but right now she has just opened a new business and has her hands full! She recognizes that this season of life just isn’t the right time for another baby.

It’s so easy when you’re in the middle of changing diapers, teaching toddlers, and longing for a full night’s sleep to wish your kids would hurry up and get to the next stage. You might have a tough time seeing past the little handprints on your glass door to a future of relative calm and quiet. Never fear! Before you know it your toddlers will be heading off to school with barely a backward glance.

Each season of life has its blessings and its burdens. Sometimes we get so focused on the burdens that we miss the blessings. The Bible talks about the seasons of life in Ecclesiastes, saying that there is a season for every time of life. It’s important to appreciate each season as you live through it. Otherwise, you may look back with regret for having wished your life away.

I miss the baby season. I loved giving birth and nursing my babies. But I love where I am right now. I enjoy the relationship with my grown daughter – after some difficult high school years we’ve become good friends. Seeing my son graduate from high school is bittersweet, but I really enjoy both of my teenagers. And I’m thankful I still have one who isn’t quite a teen yet. I’m enjoying his last elementary years knowing that this is the last time I’ll pass this way.

Whether you’re trying to get pregnant, or you’re expecting your first child, or you’re in the middle of your child-bearing years, savor each moment. This season will be over all too soon!
