Recognize the Early Signs of Autism

By Michele Trosclair, RN, BSN

With the present rate of Autism at 1 in every 150 children, it is essential to recognize the early signs of Autism. Research suggests that children as young as one year of age can show signs of Autism. In October 29, 2007, two clinical reports were released from the AAP in order to help pediatricians recognize Autism earlier and guide families to effective early interventions, which will ultimately improve the lives of children with Autism and their families.

The first report introduces universal screening at 18 and 24 months regardless of whether there are any concerns. Early concerns can include:

  • not turning when the parent says the baby’s name
  • not turning to look when the parent points says, “Look at…” and not pointing themselves to show parents an interesting object or event
  • lack of back and forth babbling
  • smiling late
  • failure to make eye contact with people

“Red Flags” that are absolute indications for immediate evaluation include the following: no babbling or pointing or other gesture by 12 months; no single words by 16 months; no two-word spontaneous phrases by 24 months; and loss of language or social skills at any age. Early intervention can make a huge difference in the child’s prognosis.

The second report discussed the importance of early intervention and treatment. This includes intensive intervention at least 25 hours per week, 12 months per year with a low student-to-teacher ratio allowing for sufficient one-on-one time. The report also suggests that pediatricians become informed about complementary and alternative medicine therapies, in order to better evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.

Both reports will also be part of the new AAP practical resource for pediatricians “AUTISM: Caring for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Resource Toolkit for Clinicians.” Should you have questions regarding your child’s development or possible signs of Autism, discuss your concerns with your pediatrician as soon as possible.
