Mommy, Sing to Me

By Denie Riggs

Have you ever wondered why a woman’s voice is pitched higher than a man’s? God knew and modern research documents that babies prefer higher pitched sounds and need them for proper development. Your baby is emotionally aware and requires stimulation and love. Singing is how you best fulfill that need.

The Bible commands us 119 times to sing. Fifty-one times we are commanded to “Sing to the Lord” and it is alluded to many more times.

The Bible doesn’t say:

  • Sing if you feel like it.
  • Listen to music.
  • Sing if you are gifted.

We see in Psalm 147: 1-2, that when a mother reveres and worships God, her womb produces offspring that will be mighty on the earth, a generation blessed of God. What a reason to sing unto the Lord!

Here are some other reasons moms need to sing:

  • Singing to your baby enhances bonding. Your voice is one of the most intimate and pleasurable events experienced by your prenatal baby.
  • Singing to your baby enhances communication after birth. Singing enhances your abilities to communicate.
  • Mom’s voice builds prenatal memories. Songs passed down from generation to generation soothe an irritable baby, especially if the songs were sung during pregnancy.
  • Familiar songs convey a sense of emotional comfort.
  • Traditional lullabies, as well as newly composed songs by Mom and Dad, are personal musical expressions of love from parents to their baby.
  • Music forms a soothing bond to comfort and reassure your baby.

Focus on the Lord with your singing … not your ability or lack of it. Your baby doesn’t judge you. Your baby needs this stimulation. Only YOU can provide it. As mothers sing to the Lord, thankfully worshiping Him with voice and even with a musical instrument (Psalm 147:7), their children will be the benefactors: spirit, soul and body.
