Hearing the Father’s Voice

By Michael David Riggs

Words carry power. According to Proverbs 18:21, death and life are in the power of the tongue. When God created man He did it with words. He is the “Father” of all living in the sense that He originated life. In conception and childbirth he brings a mother and father into His awesome creative process and allows us to have a part in it. What a high, noble, lofty opportunity that is! Your words have power to shape and mold, especially that which is forming in the womb. Therefore, it is vitally important that you speak the right words to your baby in utero!

Dad, your voice is vital to the development of your baby in your wife’s womb. For your baby to be healthy and whole he or she needs to hear your voice. I believe this is true emotionally and physically since physical health is affected by emotional health. However, This is also true spiritually. In a society where fathers do not play their role and bear their responsibility, that society suffers spiritually. A child who is influenced by a strong but loving, responsible father has an image of God in his or her mind of a strong, loving provider. Children are invariably drawn to that.

Dad, you are not “going to be a dad” when your baby is born; you are a dad now, if your wife is pregnant! You are part of God’s creative process, the “fathering” process. That process is affected by your words, and the time for those words to begin to be filled with life is while your baby is in the womb. Your wife is bearing your baby, your descendant, your destiny, your legacy, and most importantly your “inheritance from the Lord.” (Psalm 127:3) This is a period of time for you to realize your God-given, God ordained role in the life giving and perpetuating process. Speak to your baby regularly while in your wife’s womb. I realize this may be awkward for a man who has a hard time with intimacy or expressing love, but if there were ever a time to overcome that, it is now! Lovingly speak words of peace and security. Your baby needs to hear the father’s voice.
